About DiscFilms

In 1999, I set off to San Diego for the UPA National Championships with a brand new mini-dv camera to make "The Ultimate Film". After watching the official video from the previous year's championships, which was completely unedited and featured such stirring plays as someone walking the disc up to the goal line after it was thrown 20 yards out of the back of the endzone, I knew I could do a better job capturing the thrills and athleticism of ultimate. It turned out some other folks from Los Angeles had the same idea and far more resources (resulting in the first Above and Beyond video), but I came home with 10 hours of great footage, much of it of the Philadelphia women's team, the Philly Peppers.

My first effort at making an ultimate video resulted in the Peppers movie, a 25-minute homage to the Peppers trip to Nationals set to various rock tunes. The ladies loved it and that was enough to make me want to do more. I sent the video to the UPA for an ultimate film festival advertised in the newsletter. In response I received a call from UPA director Joey Gray asking if I was interested in making a movie of the 2000 Junior National Championships coming up in Philadelphia. Along with Mark "the Pickleman" Mitten, I shot and edited what turned out to be a great ultimate tournament won by a Seattle squad led by Chase Sparling-Beckly and Jimmy Chou. The semi-final game where Newton North upset Amherst was one of the best ultimate games I have ever seen on any level.

The 2000 Junior Nationals video was followed by the 2000 Co-Ed Nationals video. These are both excellent videos that feature original music by a now defunct, but totally excellent, local band called Love Syndicate.

In 2001, I connected with my good friend Mike Adlis, who runs the Wildwood Beach tournament, and I made Wildwood Number 9, the first of 5 Wildwood movies I've made. Every Saturday night at Wildwood we now show the previous year's video on a big screen on the beach and after a full day of play, good chow, and plenty of beer, the crowd always goes wild!

In 2002, I decided to make a documentary of my Masters team, O.L.D. S.A.G., as we prepared for our 3rd straight trip to nationals. I picked a good year to do it as we went all the way to the title and this 60-minute video captures an ultimate team's triumph like none other.

All of the Discfilms movies are set to music. I always envisioned ultimate on a big screen looking like a Warren Miller skiing video or a surfing video. For the ultimate enthusiast there is nothing more fun to watch.
